The Dental Industry Rabbit Hole

I know this topic of dentistry is “off-topic” from my normal niche under the umbrella of narcissism, but when we learn more, sometimes we, I, am compelled to write more about the larger scale impact, when narcissism in interpersonal relations, becomes more global. This is an example of going outside my niche, and hope you will find this article beneficial.

I went down the root canal rabbit hole recently as I anticipated a dentist(s) to one day tell me I needed the inevitable. So I embarked on the journey so I would know my options beforehand, and try to prevent it.

And while the rabbit trail is wide and long, I elected to move in the direction of homeopathy and/or natural dental treatments as preventative measures so I can keep my teeth and gums in the best shape possible for as long as possible and manage some tooth pain I was having.

Yes, controversial, what isn’t nowadays…

But the question is…

Why didn’t my dentist discuss or provide these options with me?

Why did I have to bring these up? And when I did…they said and I quote, “if you do those things, you may not need…”

So is the dental industry just another scam in the USA? Or, related, why has the dental tourism industry increased

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor or dentist, as with anything please do your own research and consult with your dentist.

In this article, I’m going to share a variety of methods that helped me to manage tooth pain for a time which may be helpful. But yes, see a dentist when you are able, but keep in mind not one of these methods below was provided to me by my dentist.

Some of these methods (below) may be helpful if you are traveling and may not have access to your dentist for some time. Or, maybe you are choosing to live abroad and want to keep your dental health needs in order.

The following are some natural ways to manage, stop, and/or prevent tooth pain so you can try to avoid a root canal or possibly an extraction:

Salt Rinse

(1) Salt Rinse

Salt is a natural antiseptic according to this article. it can help to reduce bacteria in the mouth and help to heal an infection or wound.

Gargle with a mixture of salt (1 tsp. of salt with an 8-ounce glass of warm water) for a couple of minutes. Do not swallow.

Have you ever heard someone say swimming in salt water (like the ocean for example) is good for you? This could be one reason why.

Oil Pulling

(2) Oil Pulling.

The concept of oil pulling is to reduce the bacteria in your mouth, may help with inflammation, and even improve gum health. Read more about it here. Some of the best oils to use are coconut or sesame oil. Sesame Oil may help to neutralize acid and boost dental health.

Swish about a tablespoon in your mouth once a day, or sometimes twice a day for 10–20 minutes, and spit into a trash can instead of the sink as it can clog pipes. Rinse your mouth and brush your teeth when complete.

Sesame Seeds

(3) Chew on Sesame Seeds.

Did you know that chewing on sesame seeds can help to dissolve plaque and help to rebuild tooth enamel? Is this the biggest hidden secret? Have you tried this method?

Turmeric

(4) Take Turmeric.

There have been a lot of discussions lately on the benefits of turmeric combined with black pepper to help with inflammation. As it turns out, turmeric has another benefit not commonly discussed within the dental industry.

Turmeric may also help with dental plaque and reduce dental decay

Ginger

(5) Take Ginger.

Ginger may help to remove dental plaque, help to keep cavities at bay, may temporarily help to relieve tooth pain, helps to reduce inflammation, and more.

Baking Soda

(6) Baking Soda.

The more I research the dental industry the more I want to know. I want to know the hidden secrets, which may have been around for decades, which for some reason they didn’t want us to know.

If you have tooth pain, create a mixture of baking soda and water. This mixture can help to eliminate dental plaque, which can be used twice daily.

You can also create a paste using less water and apply it directly to the gums and let it sit to absorb. This mixture can help the mouth heal and improve by changing the PH in the mouth, where an alkaline environment is created and bacteria cannot survive.

This same mixture of baking soda and water can be used to brush teeth as well, creating homemade toothpaste which is helpful in preventing cavities from forming. Look for the organic baking soda and one that is also aluminum-free.

Oil of Oregano

(7) Oil of Oregano.

Have you heard oil of oregano is anti-inflammatory and can be used as an anti-bacterial remedy? Oil of oregano has been touted as one of the best herbs to have on hand due to its benefits for the body.

Before using oil of oregano be sure to read up on its uses and the best way to apply it, here.

Cloves

(8) Chew on Cloves.

Chewing on cloves can help with dental pain.

Take 2–3 cloves and put them in your mouth near where you have tooth pain. In a few minutes, the cloves will break down and become more malleable. As you chew the cloves, the oil will release and help to alleviate or reduce tooth pain.

Hydrogen Peroxide

(9) Hydrogen Peroxide.

If you are experiencing tooth pain, gargle with hydrogen peroxide.

Peroxide may help to kill off the bacteria in your mouth, which may be causing the pain. In addition, the whole mouth may benefit from the rinse. Mix in water to dilute.

I have also come to learn recently that some have successfully brushed their teeth with hydrogen peroxide, some for 30 years, with no cavities. Please be sure to research the food grade hydrogen peroxide options.

Apple Cider vinegar

(10) Apple Cider Vinegar.

Is your mouth acidic? Try a mixture of about 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 12 oz. of water, once or twice a day to remove extra acid. Add in some lemon or lime, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper for a nice mixture. This may assist in digestion, help to control acid reflux, and to prevent an acid film from forming on teeth which can lead to dental erosion.

Raw Garlic and Honey

(11) Eat Raw Garlic and Honey.

Another way to keep your teeth in top shape is to eat garlic. Raw garlic by itself can have a bit of spice, by adding it to raw honey makes it not only palatable but this combination may help to prevent gum disease, gingivitis, bleeding, and supports dental health.

Cod Lier Oil

(12) Cod Liver Oil.

Cod liver oil increases dental health since it’s anti-inflammatory and it may even help to prevent cavities or tooth decay. Weston Price conducted a study the research showed that 90% of cavities could be reduced. Read more here.

Dosage: Adults are recommended to take 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. 2–3 times daily.

Flouride Free/Hydroxyapatite/Glycerin Free

(13) Brush with a Flouride-Free Toothpaste that contains Hydroxyapatite.

Hydroxyapatite is effective to reduce tooth decay, cavities, and enamel erosion. It has also been stated to replenish your enamel. Glycerin Free too. Pictured below, is a product (their whole product line appears to be great), recommended to me by a biological dentist. This one below is the product I am currently using and love it.

Get the Worms Out!

(14) Do a Parasite Cleanse. Say What?

In the USA and Canada, it is a taboo subject, and many may claim that parasites are a hidden cause of many diseases in the human body, but there has been a study that shows that the grinding of teeth (bruxism) may be linked to parasites.

Over time the grinding of teeth can lead to the wearing down of teeth and impact dental health. If you haven’t done a cleanse before, it may be worth considering as parasites can impact other areas of health, not just dental health. Please also visit RogersHood to learn more.

If you wish to take your dental health into your own hands after doing your own research of course, I invite you to check out these other resources.

1. Read this article by Robin Openshaw (Green Smoothie Girl) as she discusses dental health from a holistic, biological perspective. The article is packed with information that can be useful for your situation.

2. Need to find a holistic biological dentist in your area? Here’s a link, currently this appears to in the USA only.

While this list appears to be wonderful, please also do your own research on the actual dentist. I would not be surprised if dentist offices can pay to have their name added to a database but not actually perform by holistic/biological standards.  This list is a start, we are grateful for it, but let it not be the end all, be all.

3. Consider going outside the USA. While you can search for ‘biological dentist’ or ‘holistic dentist’ and then the city name, oftentimes search results will not pull in the information you need. But, it’s a resource and something to check from time to time. Mexico, Turkey, and there are a lot of countries outside the USA that have excellent dental facilities for a fraction of the cost as compared to the USA/Canada.

4. The International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxology (IAOMT), this site has a lot of information where you can easily spend some time learning more about holistic dentistry.

Have you tried any of these methods? Are any of these new to you?
